Gilbert Burns is out of the UFC 251 event
UFC 251's
main event was cancelled due to the coronavirus, with middleweight rival
Gilbert Burns' tests positive for COVID-19 and coming out of his upcoming fight
against champion Kamaro Usman.
Burns
traveled from Florida, where he was preparing for the UFC 251 event, to Las
Vegas. The promo uses the city as a hub to send athletes abroad to the venue,
testing them for COVID-19 results before travelling to the Middle East and
specifically Abu Dhabi on Yas Island. Burns tested positive, along with his
brother and teammate, Herbert Burns, and coach Greg Jones. This follows the
injury of one of their teammates, Aung Sang, who revealed that he had recently
been tested for the coronavirus. It is not
known at this time whether the UFC will be able to find a replacement opponent
for Usman. Many thought Usman would fight Jorge Masvidal in the event, but when
contract negotiations with the UFC worsened, Burns appeared strongly on ufc
radar, which had already won UFC victories over Demyan Maia. Tyrone Woodley
this year, before the role.
Two more
fights will be scheduled at UFC 251: badminton champion Alexander Volkanovski
match with former champion Max Holloway, and the battle for the Bantamweight
belt between Jose Aldo and Peter Jan.
